Birthday Bash!

I can't think of much that happened at the beginning of this week, except the usual adventures of a stay-at-home-mom.  You know; cleaning, diaper changes, grocery shopping, a trip to the library, and lots of slobbery kisses. :)  But, Lane's birthday was yesterday, so I still have lots to blog about.  Here are his birthday pictures I took.

Jonathan's brother Don, and his wife Heather were able to come up to celebrate with us.  Maggie adores them and it was fun to have some family to share the day with.

Jonathan was nicknamed "little bear" when he was Lane's age because he grunted and growled while he crawled around.  We call Lane the same thing on occasion because he does the same thing.  When he gets really excited and tries to crawl really fast, he ends up going more diagonal than straight, just like a bear does when they run.  Sometimes we call him "little bull" too because he likes to charge toward us with his head down.  It's cute now, but he can't lead with his head once he's big enough to play football :)  Anyway, since he's our little bear, I thought a bear cake would be fitting.

He wasn't really sure what to think of his beehive cupcake at first, but it didn't take him long to smash it all up and lick it off his fingers.

He got some cute John Deere boots from Don and Heather, a firetruck toy from Jonathan's parents, a Weeble's bus and rumbling truck toy from us, and I sewed him some new ties and wrapped them up with his new church shirt that doesn't fit yet.  He has a few gifts in transit somewhere too.  Maggie keeps calling the school bus hers, which I knew would happen since she loves school buses, but I figured it would be a fun toy for them to play with together :)  Maggie even got to join in the fun and open one of her birthday presents early; two princess dresses from Don and Heather.

Lane in a nutshell:

  •  He has four teeth, with at least three more on their way.
  • He blows kisses, claps his hands when you say "good job", waves good-bye if you say "night-night", likes to make clicking noises with his tongue, plays peek-a-boo.
  • He says "uh-oh, "mama", "neigh", and "moo".
  • He loves to giggle and make funny faces.  People have always commented about how content and happy he is all the time.
  • He took two steps on his own today, but doesn't seem in too big of a hurry to walk.
  • Maggie is his best buddy and partner in crime.
  • He will eat almost anything I try to feed him.
  • His sleeping is not very consistent, but mostly just when he's teething (which is a long process!)
  • He is a momma's boy, but loves wrestling with Daddy.
  • He really likes to cover his head with shirts, towels, blankets, etc. and then pull it off and giggle.
  • I'm not positive on his most recent weight and height yet, but I'm guessing he's somewhere around 18.5 pounds.  We'll find out at his check-up.
We're so glad he joined our family.  Here's to another great year!

I just remembered one other thing that happened this week.  Nearly every time we go grocery shopping the cashier gives Maggie a treat or a sticker.  Now she has come to expect it and doesn't understand that some stores don't give out treats, and that sometimes the cashier forgets.  The whole time I'm in line she says to me, "I want a treat" over and over again and I explain to her that the treat is a reward and she doesn't always get one; that if she always got a treat it wouldn't be as exciting when it did happen.  Anyway, when we went grocery shopping this week she was already a little pouty that she didn't get to sit in the race-car cart.  Then she kept asking for a sticker in line and I was getting a little annoyed that she wasn't understanding me when I told her she couldn't keep asking for it, that they would give it to her if they wanted to.  Blah blah blah; two, practically three year olds can be hard to reason with sometimes.  Maggie finally got her sticker and was happily putting it on her shirt when the florist came up and asked me if she could give Maggie a rose.  I said yes, and Maggie was so excited to pick her rose out (pink of course!).  She loved it and held it for most of the day.  It was worth seeing the delight in her eyes, but I'm really not looking forward to standing in line tomorrow having Maggie whining for a rose :)  (I did give her a long talk about how it was just a one time deal and she's not going to get the rose every time we go to the store now.  We'll see how it goes tomorrow :)
