Memory Monday: Old Tennesee

When I was just old enough to read well, my family went out to eat at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants, Los Hermanos.  I wanted to be a big girl and order all by myself.  I read over the menu and made my selection.  When the waiter asked what I would like, I proudly told him my selection.

"And what would you like to drink?"

I had been so occupied with picking out my meal that I completely forgot about a drink.  I wanted to prove I could do this on my own and I didn't want anyone to notice my negligence.  I should have answered with "water", but I wanted to see my options, and water wasn't a very exciting answer.  I quickly glanced at the "beverage" section of the menu and decided on the first drink I came to.

"I'll have a Jack Daniels."

The whole table, waiter, and possibly even other diners, burst out in laughter.  I didn't understand what was so funny, but I knew they were laughing at me.  I started to cry.  Then my mom told me that Jack Daniels is alcoholic.  I didn't feel like a big girl anymore, even though I had just tried to order whiskey.  I felt like crawling under the table and hiding.

The waiter took pity on me and brought me out a free raspberry and blackberry shake called a "brisa".  It had about a three inch dallop of fresh whipped cream on top and was absolutely delicious.  It was love at first taste and I guess you could say Old Jack introduced us :)  It became a regular for us anytime we went out to eat there.

Love how you capture the emotion of that memory in your writing! Isn't it funny how some of those little moments turn into "big" memories. I posted the football schedule on my blog- just in case! Glad your little guyisback home and on the mend.....scarey!
